Permanent makeup is a great option if you want to spend less time applying makeup every morning while still looking polished and defined. But one of the most common questions I’m asked during consultations is: how long does permanent makeup actually last?
The answer depends on the treatment, your skin type, lifestyle and how well you look after your permanent makeup.
How long do permanent makeup brows last?
Permanent makeup brows will typically last around 1–3 years before they gradually fade and need refreshing.
How quickly they fade can vary depending on your skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure and skincare routine. Oily skin can sometimes cause pigment to fade more quickly, while drier skin may retain the pigment for longer.
It’s important to remember that permanent makeup is designed to softly fade over time. This allows the colour and shape to be refreshed as your features, preferences and natural brows change.
How long does lip blush last?
Lip blush can typically last around 2-3 years, although everyone is different.
Immediately after treatment, the colour will look stronger and brighter. As the lips heal, the pigment softens considerably, leaving a much more natural result.
Your final colour is designed to enhance your natural lips rather than look like permanently applied lipstick.
How long does permanent eyeliner last?
Permanent eyeliner tends to have excellent longevity and can often last around 2-5 years before a colour boost is wanted.
Because the pigment is placed along the lash line, it can give the appearance of fuller, more defined lashes without needing to apply eyeliner every day.
As with all permanent makeup, the pigment will gradually soften over time rather than suddenly disappear.
What makes permanent makeup fade faster?
There are several things that can affect how long your results last, including sun exposure, skin type, skincare products, lifestyle and your individual metabolism.
Products containing active ingredients such as retinol, acids and exfoliants can also increase fading when regularly used over the treated area.
Using SPF and following the correct aftercare can help keep your permanent makeup looking its best for longer.
Will I need a colour boost?
Eventually, yes. Most clients choose to have a colour boost once their permanent makeup has noticeably softened.
You don’t necessarily need to wait until the pigment has completely disappeared. A colour boost can restore definition and refresh the colour while keeping the results natural.
Thinking about permanent makeup?
If you’re considering permanent makeup brows, lip blush or permanent eyeliner, the best treatment will depend on your natural features, skin and the result you’d like to achieve.
