If you have been thinking about permanent eyebrows

If you have been thinking about permanent eyebrows, you may already have a collection of saved photos – but still feel unsure which style would actually suit you.
Should you choose realistic hairstrokes? A softly shaded powder brow? Or a combination of both?
The honest answer is that the best permanent eyebrow style is not simply the one you like most on somebody else. It should be chosen around your natural brows, skin type, facial features and the way you want to look and feel each day.
Perhaps your brows have become sparse over time, they no longer feel even, or you are tired of trying to recreate the same shape every morning. You want to look fresher and more polished – but you certainly do not want brows that appear harsh, heavy or obviously tattooed.
That is exactly why every eyebrow treatment at Jenna’s PMU is completely bespoke.
What are the different permanent eyebrow styles?
At Jenna’s PMU, I use machine micropigmentation techniques to create three main eyebrow styles:
- Powder or ombré brows
- Machine hairstrokes, also known as nano brows
- Combination brows
Each style can be made softer or more defined. The right choice will depend on the finish you love and, just as importantly, what will heal best within your skin.
Powder or ombré brows
Powder brows are created using tiny pixels of pigment to build a soft, shaded finish.
Despite the name, they do not need to look bold or heavily made up. A beautifully created powder brow can heal incredibly soft and natural – similar to the effect of lightly applied brow powder.
The fronts can be kept airy, with gentle definition added through the body and tail of the brow. The colour, shape and depth are all tailored to you.
Powder brows may be right for you if:
- You normally fill your brows with pencil or powder
- You would like a soft but defined shape
- Your brows are sparse, uneven or missing in certain areas
- You want a polished finish without drawing them on each morning
- Your skin is oily, mature or less suited to individual hairstrokes
- You want a style that generally retains well over time
Many women initially believe hairstrokes will look the most natural. However, once they see how soft a healed powder brow can be, they realise this style may give them the subtle, flattering result they actually want.
Machine hairstrokes or nano brows
Machine hairstrokes are created with a fine needle and permanent makeup machine. Delicate strokes are placed through the brow to imitate the appearance of natural hairs.
This style can be ideal for someone who wants a very light, airy result rather than a softly filled-in appearance.
Machine hairstrokes may be right for you if:
- You have normal-to-dry skin
- You already have some natural brow hair
- You want to add fullness while keeping a fluffy appearance
- You prefer an individual-hair effect
- Your skin is suitable for crisp, healed hairstrokes
Not every skin type will hold hairstrokes in the same way. On very oily or more textured skin, strokes may heal less crisply or blur together over time. This is why I assess your skin rather than recommending a treatment based on a photograph alone.
Combination brows
Combination brows bring together machine hairstrokes and soft powder shading.
Hairstrokes can be used to create a natural appearance at the front or through sparse areas, while shading adds definition and fullness through the rest of the brow.
Combination brows may be right for you if:
- You like the softness of hairstrokes but want extra definition
- You have gaps that need more coverage
- You want a natural front with a more polished body and tail
- You usually wear some brow makeup but do not want a solid finish
- Your skin is suitable for a combination of techniques
This can be a lovely middle ground for someone who wants texture and softness while still achieving a complete, balanced brow.
What about microblading?
I do not offer traditional microblading. Instead, I use a permanent makeup machine for all of my eyebrow treatments.
Microblading uses a manual blade to create cuts within the skin. Machine micropigmentation uses a needle that moves in and out of the skin in a controlled way, allowing me to carefully build hairstrokes or shading.
I prefer machine techniques because they give me greater control and can be kinder to the skin, with less risk of the scarring associated with repeatedly microblading the same area. They also allow me to adapt the treatment for a wider range of clients, including those with mature or oily skin.
Will my permanent eyebrows look too dark?
This is one of the most common concerns I hear – especially from women who want to look like themselves, just a little fresher and more put together.
Permanent eyebrows will usually appear darker and more defined immediately after treatment. As the skin heals, the colour softens and settles into a much more natural finish.
Your brows will not be designed without you. Before any pigment is implanted, I carefully map and pre-draw the shape so that you can see and approve it. We will also discuss the level of definition you feel comfortable with.
There are no surprise brows here.
How do I know which eyebrow shape will suit my face?
Your permanent brow shape should not be copied from a trend or transferred from another person’s face.
During your appointment, I consider:
- Your natural brow growth
- Your facial structure and proportions
- Your skin type and condition
- Any areas of hair loss or asymmetry
- Your usual makeup style
- How soft or defined you want the healed result to be
- How the brows are likely to age within your skin
The aim is not to give you a completely different face. It is to restore balance, frame your features and create brows that feel as though they have always belonged to you.
What if I am still unsure?
You do not need to know which technique you want before coming to see me.
Your complimentary consultation and patch test are there to give you the opportunity to ask questions, see the different styles and talk honestly about any worries you may have. I will assess your natural brows and skin before recommending the option most likely to give you a beautiful healed result.
Your treatment also includes bespoke brow mapping, your initial permanent makeup appointment, a six-week retouch and a premium aftercare pack.
Permanent makeup is a two-step process. The first appointment lays the foundations, while the retouch allows me to perfect the colour, shape and any areas that have healed more softly.
The right brows should still feel like you
Choosing permanent eyebrows is not about changing who you are.
It is about having one less thing to think about on a busy morning. It is catching your reflection before the school run, work or a night out and already feeling polished. It is enjoying the pool, the gym and everyday life without worrying whether your brows have disappeared.
Most importantly, it is about doing something for yourself without feeling guilty about it.
Whether your perfect style is a soft powder brow, delicate machine hairstrokes or a combination of the two, your treatment will be created entirely around you.
